You can use a collection metafield to easily control the banner (hero) image on each collection page. This allows you to set a unique banner per collection without connecting anything in the theme editor.

Create and assign the Collections metafield
Go to Settings > Metafields → Collections → Add definition
Set the following values:
Name: Hero image
Key: theme.hero_image
Type: Image (File)

Where do I upload the image?
Open a collection in Products → Collections, then upload the image to the Hero image metafield.

Once you upload an image to this metafield, it will automatically display as the collection banner — no need to connect the metafield in the theme editor manually.

Note
If the hero image does not appear, or if the collection image is shown instead, it’s because the option Show collection image is enabled.
ON: The banner uses the collection image set in the Collection manager.
OFF: The banner uses the metafield image ("theme.hero_image") / fixed image (if set).
Make sure this option is set correctly based on which image source you want to display.
