In 7 years of working with both WordPress and Shopify, we have been fortunate enough to work with customers who use both platforms. We can surely say that WooCommerce and Shopify are the two most popular platforms currently available for small and medium stores. (Of course there are also some big and famous stores but the number is quite small).
Let me analyze each of the platforms advantages, disadvantages and costs, and from there you can make the right decision about whether to choose WooCommerce or Shopify for your store. I will write from my own personal point of view for each platform, and let you decide for yourself which is the best e-commerce platform for your store.
I will evaluate these aspects:
– Plugins / Apps
WordPress is a very popular platform and it is estimated that 70% of all websites around the world use it. WordPress can help you do a lot of things, and I can personally say that it is the best platform I’ve ever encountered. You can do almost everything with WordPress, and if you have a little knowledge of programming or HTML / CSS, you can control your site very easily and conveniently.
With WooCommerce, you can also easily create an online store with thousands of supported themes and plugins. Although, you must have a bit of programming knowledge (which is great!), but that’s also one of the drawbacks of WordPress.
One more thing, you also need to have a bit of knowledge about hosting and domain configuration to get your website to work. It would be crazy if on a beautiful day, your site was visited by hackers and all of your data was lost. (Then you would have to contact your hosting provider to fix it, or solve it by yourself. So messed up!)
This often happens with WordPress websites…
WordPress has a huge advantage in that it has many Themes, and you have thousands of options to choose for your Store.
You can go to Envato market and browse WordPress themes to choose one which is the most suitable for your store. I also have an article on how to choose good quality themes on Envato / ThemeForest. You can take a look at it if you please.
On the Envato Market, it is very difficult to sell a WordPress theme because the “reviews checker” is very strict. But for this reason almost all of the themes are of good quality, and you can use almost any one of them for your online store
In addition to the theme, WordPress offers a lot of plugins that you can find here or on CodeCayon. Almost all of them are free and you can choose suitable plugins for your store from a wide selection.
The cost to use WordPress is relatively cheap. I can give you an example to show how much you might pay a year.
– Domain + Hosting: 100$/year
– Buy one WordPress theme from Envato: 59$
– Plugin: free or paid (but almost all of them are offered for free).
So the estimated cost is around $159 a year (in the case you change one theme every year).
Note: The cost does not include development work. For example if your site is quite special or if you need to develop special features, the cost at that time could be much higher.
When you use Shopify:
- You will be assured of technical issues.
- You do not need to know about hosting and domain configuration
- You do not need to have programming knowledge or HTML / CSS (but if you know HTML / CSS, it will surely be helpful).
- You don’t have to worry that one day your website will be hacked like WordPress (not poor security from WordPress, but rather users easily make mistakes that allow their website to drop into hackers’ hands).
When you use Shopify you have to completely depend on them, and if you violate their terms your online store could be closed at any time. Otherwise, you have full assurance from Shopify.
An advantage of Shopify is that Shopify has great support for marketing and platforms such as Google Shopping, Amazon, Ebay …
Using Shopify is like an endless trip in which you will discover its great functions as you go, although the price is not cheap 🙂
You have many choices for Shopify themes. You can purchase a theme from the Shopify Theme Store but the price is quite high, approximately $180. You could also purchase a quality theme from ThemeForest at a more affordable price of about $59.
Of course if you purchase a theme from the Shopify Theme Store, the quality will be guaranteed as they censor quite carefully before allowing the themes to be released. Unfortunately with ThemeForest, many themes are, well let’s just say “quite bad”. You should learn how to choose a theme from ThemeForest here or take a look at themes arranged by the best Shopify themes here.
Different from the “plugin”, with Shopify you will get acquainted with the “App” concept. Basically they work in the same way and Shopify supports a huge selection of quality apps. There are many great apps, but the price is quite high because it’s not open source like WordPress. A great many of the Apps also require monthly fees.
I know of customers that have to pay thousands of dollars in monthly app fees, of course their profits are so big that they can afford to pay that much.
Finally, let’s talk about price. The price for you to use Shopify is quite high. I will estimate charges at their minimum price for a new user to give you the most objective view.
– Domain: $30/year
– Shopify Basic plan: $29/month (not including Shopify payment fees)
– Theme: 180$
– App: about $20/month for the most basic apps (This can add up quickly).
So the estimated cost is around $800/year (if you change a theme every year)
Note: The cost does not include development work. For example if your site is quite special or you need to develop special features, the cost at that time would be much higher.
With all there is to offer, it is sometimes difficult to choose which platform to use. But it depends on you and your needs (and abilities). If you have a bit of programming knowledge, it might be in your best interest to use WordPress. If you are merely a store owner and do not want to wrestle with hosting and server configuration, and you are willing to invest a little extra money to focus on marketing, then Shopify may be for you.
